The STM PowerUnit and the Stirling engine based on external combustion is capable of burning a variety of conventional fuels including natural gas, hydrogen and propane gas, resource recovery fuels such as flare gas and coal bed methane gas, or renewable biogas fuels from landfills an anaerobic digesters, sewage or agricultural waste.

The PowerUnit is also capable to burn low energy content gases (LHV = Lower Heating Value) that usually cause problems when fired in internal combustion engines or are even vented off - a really bad choice in relation to the ongoing discussion and more so to the disastrous impact of greenhouse gases on our environment.

Besides fermentation (i.e. production of biogas) there is the process of gasification for all kinds of materials from Altreifen (old tyres) to waste to wood.

One fine example of developing alternative technologies is introduced by the German company > FARMER AUTOMATIC, an expert in all kinds of farming equipment. FARMER has developed a method to gasify manure and - by taking advantage of the STM PowerUnit - to directly generate electric energy.

Their slogan "Turn sh.. into cash!" might sound a bit drastic, but only on hearing it the first time; the process bears a number of very important advantages:

the gasifying process can be started and stopped as needed
the gaseous emissions are converted into energy immediately
manure management through to energy generation happens in a controlled and monitored complete process
no need to store or handle manure in between each stage
eliminates pressure on manure disposal issues
no waste - but energy and fertilizer - all by-products used
thought through to the final solution
